The third concert of the Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival 2011 features two acclaimed contemporary music groups: Da Capo Chamber Players and Argento Chamber Ensemble.
Jeffrey Mumford's chamber concerto through a stillness brightening was written for the violinist Miranda Cuckson and Argento, who perform the world premiere. Mumford casts the solo violin as an ever-changing ray of light, diffused through a forest. CEC artistic director Victoria Bond plays out her fascination with the mystical Tarot cards in her Instruments of Revelations. The Magician is full of rhythmic energy and mystery; the melodic High Priestess demonstrates that figure's wisdom, spirituality and passion, and The Fool - a character who can get away with blunt truthfulness because of his simple-mindedness - is driven by chaotic, unexpected impulses. Da Capo's New York premiere performance follows on the heels of the acclaimed world premiere in Chicago.
Harold Meltzer's Exiles features mezzo-soprano Mary Nessinger with Da Capo Chamber Players in settings of poems by Conrad Aiken and Hart Crane which contrast scenes of loneliness. Dramatic music inspired by the myth of Icarus and the poetry of W.H. Auden, La Chute D'Icare by the British-born composer Brian Ferneyhough, completes the program.
Composer Victoria Bond launched Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival to bring together composers, performers and New York audiences in an intimate and inviting setting. Since its first season in 1998, CEC has blossomed into a four-concert festival, attracting audiences from the tri-state area and performers from around the country. Since its inception, over 30 world premieres and dozens of New York premieres have been performed at Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival. A significant feature of Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival is that all composers will be in attendance and speak briefly about their music on stage with CEC artistic director Victoria Bond.
Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival 2011 is on four Monday evenings at 7:30 pm on March 28, April 4, April 11 and April 25, 2011 at the Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre in Peter Norton Symphony Space. More information, including composer interviews and videos, is at www.cuttingedgeconcerts.org.
