In the process, they gain insight into a broad range of styles, cultural and literary traditions, and approaches to writing and performing. Students experience excitement and substance with word and rhythm games, rhyming wordplay, discussion and improvisational collaborations with peers. Individually the student thinks critically by drafting and revising ideas to build a personal story or poem. The teaching artist guides them through the process of assessment, revision, rehearsing, presenting and reflection on their spoken word piece.

Vickie Tanner

Vickie Tanner is a writer and actress of stage and screen. Vickie is part of the original American cast of the critically-acclaimed STOMP, in addition to joining the National and European tours of the production. She acted in the world premiere of TANTALUS, written by John Barton and directed by Ed Hall and Sir Peter Hall. She holds a B.F.A in Theatre from the California State University at Long Beach, and studied the Meisner technique with Maggie Flanigan in New York City.

Bobby Gonzalez

Bobby Gonzalez, is a nationally-acclaimed multicultural motivational speaker, storyteller, and poet born and raised in the South Bronx. He draws on both his Native American (Taino) and Latino (Puerto Rican) roots to offer a unique repertoire that celebrates his dual heritage. The author of “The Last Puerto Rican Indian: a Collection of Dangerous Poetry” and “TAINO ZEN”, his poetry has been published in numerous periodicals and performed at institutions.
