"America's foremost filmmaker of documentaries on classical music." - The New York Times on filmmaker Allan Miller

"The movie, though conventional in form, brings us close to an elemental ferocity just barely held in check." - The New Yorker

Valery Gergiev is widely acclaimed as one of the leading conductors of our time. Currently director of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, he also holds posts at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Rotterdam Orchestra, among others. You Cannot Start without Me offers viewers an exclusive "year in the life" look at Gergiev on the go: rehearsal excerpts and performance sequences are interspersed with the Maestro's myriad activities in London, New York, and St. Petersburg. In cinema verité style, the camera captures his process and interactions with musicians to illuminate his rehearsal strategy and technique. Proceeding on several levels simultaneously, this performance-documentary allows viewers to know and understand Gergiev the man in order to better appreciate the brilliance of Gergiev the conductor.

Academy Award-winning film director Allan Miller has produced and directed over 35 films and television programs around the world, documenting some of the most important musical events of the last two decades. A production of Thirteen/WNET New York in association with White Nights Foundation of America. Produced by Margaret Smilow and Allan Miller, with Margaret Smilow and R. Douglas Sheldon as executive producers.

While you watch the film, enjoy a glass of wine and a light snack in the intimate cabaret atmosphere of the Leonard Nimoy Thalia.
