New York Lyric Opera Theatre's Hansel and Gretel

(Past) Sat, Jan 28 at 2 pm
Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Symphony Space
$45; Members, Seniors, Children $39

Hansel and Gretel: Performed in English. Semi-staged with piano accompaniment. Humperdinck's opera Hansel and Gretel is based on the Grimm brothers' whimsical fairy tale with the same name. Hansel and his sister Gretel are picking strawberries in the woods. As dusk approaches quickly, they become lost. They are forced to stay the night in the woods. At daybreak, to their dismay, they see a house made of gingerbread. As they run to take a bite, an ugly witch kidnaps the children after putting a spell on them. Hansel and Gretel trick the witch and escape but not before they push the witch into the oven. The oven suddenly explodes. The children who had been kidnapped before Hansel and Gretel arrived and had been turned into gingerbread, magically appear and become human again. As Hansel and Gretel run away from the gingerbread house, they hear the sound of their father's voice. Their mother and father are searching for them in the forest. Hansel and Gretel rush to their side.
