Harvey Fierstein is an American actor, playwright, and voice actor. He has won Tony Awards for Best Actor for his own play, Torch Song Trilogy, and for Hairspray. He also wrote the book for the musical La Cage Aux Folles, for which he won the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical and Best Lead Actor in a Play. He also garnered Tony Best Book nominations for Newsies, Kinky Boots, and Casa Valentina. Fierstein revised the book for the 2022 Broadway revival of Funny Girl. He was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2007. On screen he has appeared in or voiced roles in Mrs. Doubtfire, Mulan, and The Sissy Duckling, for which he won the Humanitas Prize for Children’s Animation in 1999. He also won a News and Documentary Emmy Award for narrating the documentary The Times of Harvey Milk. His television scripts include Hairspray Live! and The Wiz Live!, as well as the HBO drama Tidy Endings. He’s written opinion pieces for The New York Times, Huffington Post, Hartford Courant, and PBS’ In the Life. Fierstein starred in Martin Sherman’s Gently Down the Stream at the Public Theater, and his work as a playwright was also seen in the Manhattan Theatre Club’s 2019 production of Bella Bella. In 2022, Fierstein released his memoir, I Was Better Last Night, which was a New York Times bestseller.

Low-Hanging Fruit: Sparkling Whines, Champagne Problems, and Pressing Issues from My Gay Agenda will be published on October 8th.
