Wow, what a fun, jam-packed day! We started off with some short theater games and skits, including a silly one where we all turned to the person next to us and said ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ So much was expressed in one simple word, based on our body language and tone of voice!
Phil Bildner joined us for an amazing author visit about his book A Whole New Ballgame. Phil’s energy and enthusiasm about reading and writing was contagious, and he gave us a behind-the-scenes glance at the dozens of drafts he wrote for each of his books! He also showed us some amazing character sketches from drafts of the book covers.
Phil also asked all the campers to perform a writing activity about different perspectives by climbing (safely) onto our chairs to observe the room from a different position. That was especially fun because the characters in Phil’s book did the same activity, too!
At the end of Phil’s visit, we had a big surprise – because Phil’s new book, Rookie of the Year, came out today, everyone at camp got a fresh new copy. We were so lucky to be able to celebrate Phil’s “book birthday” with him! After taking a group photo and getting our books signed, we headed downtown on the subway to eat lunch in the park before going to the Central Park Zoo.
At the zoo, we split into groups to observe different animals and imagine conversations between humans and animals – if the penguins or seals or bears could talk, what would they tell us? It was a whirlwind of walking and writing and observing, so we’re guessing everyone will sleep well tonight!
Can’t wait for tomorrow, and to meet Peter Brown!
