Description
In October of 1998, Matthew Shepard, a twenty-one-year-old university student, was kidnapped, severely beaten, and left to die in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming; because he was gay.
Two months earlier, The Trevor Project, the now leading nonprofit that provides suicide prevention and crisis intervention for LGBTQ+ young people, answered it’s first phone call.
In observance of the 25th anniversary of these two events, District Productions presents a one night only benefit staged reading of Moises Kaufman and the members of the Tectonic Theater Project’s seminal play “The Laramie Project”.
Based on hundreds of interviews with residents of Laramie, Wyoming and the surrounding area, “The Laramie Project” explores the viewpoints, emotions, and mindsets of that community in the aftermath of an act of hate. Through these glimpses into their hearts and minds, we are given both a view of the depths of evil, and the glimmers of a world filled with hope, compassion, and love.
All profits from this event go to support The Trevor Project.
