SONYC - String Orchestra of New York City presents “Global Encounters: Switzerland”. SONYC's Global Encounters yearly series puts the spotlight on a specific geographic area and culture, exploring music past and present in order to make connections in a fragmented world. This year’s Swiss program includes rarely heard works by Frank Martin and Othmar Schoeck, the NY premiere of Daniel Schnyder's 'Utopia', and the World Premiere of Karl Kramer's 'The Stammerer' based on the sequences and life of Swiss monk Notker Balbulus (featuring baritone Peter Stewart).
SONYC, founded in 1999, comprises some of this nation’s extraordinary string players in a critically acclaimed tour de force ensemble. A conductorless chamber group, SONYC’s members rehearse in a collaborative effort that allows each musician to have an impact on the artistic process. The flexibility and intimacy of a string quartet are thus fused with the power and scope of an orchestra. A herald of new music from around the world, SONYC has given over 50 world and US premieres.
-"SONYC is a composer's dream” (Paul Moravec).
-"[SONYC is] opening up the world again for the audience to become more emotionally and experientially involved” (Aaron Jay Kernis).
SONYC is the recipient of Harvard University’s Fromm Foundation Grant, the Meet the Composers Residency Grant, the Aaron Copland Fund for Music Recording Grant, and Columbia University's Alice M. Ditson Fund.
