Music From China "Premiere Works XXVI"

Description

The sound of contemporary Chinese music composed for traditional and
Western instruments is heard in works by Zhou Tian, Zhou Long, Yang Yong,
Wang Amao
and Wang Guowei. Presenting its world premiere is Zhou Tian’s
"Hundred Antiques" co-commissioned by Music From China and the Freer
Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian, in conjunction with
the exhibition "Resound: Ancient Bells of China." Hundred Antiques is a
traditional Chinese style of decorative arts and textiles often incorporating
rebuses for auspicious wishes. The composer is inspired by the use of
patterns and images symbolizing purposes and meanings otherwise not seen
on the surface which has a lasting tradition and passion in China.
Composition styles in the program range from traditional to avant-garde, with
themes drawn from Chinese art and culture.
