New York Lyric Opera Theatre presents a concert version of Rigoletto with piano performed in Italian. Set in the 16th Century in Mantua, Italy. Verdi's opera is the story of the hunchback jester, Rigoletto. He has a daughter named Gilda, who he has hidden away from the world. Tragically, her mother died when she was born so Gilda is everything to him. He warns her to never go out of the house fearing something will happen to her. She assures him that she only leaves to go to church. What she did not tell him, is that she already has met the Duke (who she believes to be a poor student) and has fallen head over heels in love with him. Suddenly, the courtiers, playing a joke on Rigoletto, break into his home and kidnap the girl they believe to be his mistress. Only until Rigoletto comes to them begging for her safe return, do they realize, she is his daughter. Rigoletto finds Gilda at the palace in the chamber of the Duke. She rushes into her father's arms distraught and sobbing. Seeing that the Duke has ruined his daughter, Rigoletto swears vengeance. Gilda, still in love with him, begs her father to forgive. In his attempt to kill the Duke, he loses everything he loves.
