The Eco-Music Big Band is proud to present three new works that speak to its mission: presenting avant-garde, cross-genre works with a vision of a better world.
MR MYSTERY: The Return of Sun Ra to Save Planet Earth is a free-jazz opera by Fred Ho and Marie Incontrera, with libretto by Quincy Troupe. In this freewheeling odyssey, visionary jazz musician Sun Ra is summoned back to life to save the world from impending destruction brought on by war, global warming, and economic decline. The Banned Bamboozler is colorful anti misogynist piece for big band featuring a setting of a Catullus poem. Michael Feinberg's new work takes its inspiration from figures in the black power movement whether they wanted to be a part of it or not.
The Eco-Music Big Band is a multigenerational "virtuoso band" (NYC Jazz Record) that defies style, tradition, and expectations with genre-bending, avant- garde performances and recordings, featuring "big-shouldered groove, fine-grained harmonies, and frothy improvising" (The New York Times). NPR has said of the band: "This hard charging outfit, led by Marie Incontrera, has more on its mind than just swing music." The Eco-Music Big Band includes some of the nation's most acclaimed cross-genre virtuoso musicians.
The Eco-Music Big Band is proud to collaborate with the Institute for Collaborative Education Public School in the East Village, Manhattan, featuring several of its promising young musicians during this performance.
