CULTURAL FIELD TRIPS AT SYMPHONY SPACE

Pre-performance Resource Guides are provided to all participating teachers which include performance descriptions, suggested activities, and pre-performance assignments for on-stage participation of selected students.

Cultural performances are held from 11am to 12pm. The performances are approximately 60 minutes long, and take place weekdays at Symphony Space.

Experience the Sights and Sounds of Indigenous American Culture:

Dressed in their stunning traditional regalia, Iroquois, Plains and Mayan Indians share their stories, music, and dances of life - then and now. Students actively engage in vocables, dances and sign language as they come to deeply understand the unity of humanity and nature that is the foundation of the Native American worldview.

A Whirlwind Tour of Latin America through Folk Dances, Carnivàle, Capoeira, Afro-Latin Jazz, and More

Travel from Mexico to Brazil from your seat at Symphony Space! Grounded in Indigenous and African influences, this performance brings the audience directly into the rhythms, dances, stories and cultural celebrations of Latin America. Featuring traditional costumes and breath-taking feats, this thrilling interactive performance engages students in the rich diversity of Latin American art and culture. Selected students join performers on stage for an Aztec Blessing, Jarabe Tapatio, King and Queen Ceremony and Capoeira Luanda.

A Rare Opportunity to Experience and Interact with Master Performances from China, India and Japan

Global Arts Asia features performance arts and gorgeous costumes showing traditional artistic heritage in a thrilling and beautiful show. Students will come to understand the story and complexity of Chinese Opera with an excerpt from The Monkey King and Martial Arts from Beijing incorporating the five elements - sing, talk, act, fight and acrobatics. Classical myths of India are told through complex rhythms, hand gestures and dance in the performance of Bharatanatyam. Invigorating Japanese Taiko drumming, flutes and the koto embrace the legends of Japan. Some lucky students will even have the opportunity to perform in the traditional Chinese Ribbon Dance! With performances rarely seen in the U.S., this performance offers a unique experience in song, dance, theatre and stories performed by master artists.
