Safety Measures at Symphony Space

We are thrilled to be welcoming you to Symphony Space!

The health and safety of all are our top priorities. Symphony Space requires that all staff, artists, and patrons be fully vaccinated (and provide proof), and that everyone (except performers on stage) wear masks while in the building.

Cultural Field Trips

Bring your students to our beautiful theatre to see the music, dance, and storytelling of cultures from around the world!

When it’s safe to be together again, we look forward to welcoming you and your students to our beautiful theater to experience the music, dance, and storytelling of cultures from around the world. Pre-performance Resource Guides are provided to all participating teachers which include performance descriptions, suggested activities, and pre-performance assignments for on-stage participation of selected students.

Cultural performances are held from 11am to 12:15pm. The performances are approximately 75 minutes long, and take place weekdays at Symphony Space.

Symphony Space is a contracted DOE vendor.

Native American Culture - January 22nd & 23rd, 2020

Experience the Sights and Sounds of Indigenous American Culture:

Dressed in their stunning traditional regalia, Iroquois, Plains and Mayan Indians share their stories, music, and dances of life - then and now. Students actively engage in vocables, dances and sign language as they come to deeply understand the unity of humanity and nature that is the foundation of the Native American worldview.


African Culture - February 5th & 6th, 2020

Celebrate Black History with the Voices, Instruments, Folklore, Dances and Drums of Africa’s Vibrant Cultural Heritage:

This irresistible fun-filled performance led by expert musicians, dancers and storytellers explores the radiant diversity of African arts and it's reach throughout the world. Students will engage in traditional African music, dance, stories, and call and response so that they become familiar with key elements of African Culture. These traditions have been handed down from generation to generation, and students will understand how and why these traditions came to be.

Latin American Culture - March 11th & 12th, 2020

A Whirlwind Tour of Latin America through Folk Dances, Carnivàle, Capoeira, Afro-Latin Jazz, and More

Travel from Mexico to Brazil from your seat at Symphony Space! Grounded in Indigenous and African influences, this performance brings the audience directly into the rhythms, dances, stories and cultural celebrations of Latin America. Featuring traditional costumes and breath-taking feats, this thrilling interactive performance engages students in the rich diversity of Latin American art and culture. Selected students join performers on stage for an Aztec Blessing, Jarabe Tapatio, King and Queen Ceremony and Capoeira Luanda.

American Expressions - April 1st & 2nd, 2020

Explore the African, European and Caribbean Influences in American Music:

Our professional musicians guide the audience through the patchwork of cultural influences that make up traditional American Music from the Colonial era through to the 20th Century. With spirituals to work songs, hand games to folk songs, gospel music to jazz and blues, students learn about the trailblazing pioneers who inspired the music of today. A lucky few will get to perform with our musicians in an American Square Dance. Students can even pre-submit their own raps and lyrics - and some will have the chance to perform their original work on stage!

Asian Culture - May 20th & 21st, 2020

A Rare Opportunity to Experience and Interact with Master Performances from China, India and Japan

Global Arts Asia features performance arts and gorgeous costumes showing traditional artistic heritage in a thrilling and beautiful show. Students will come to understand the story and complexity of Chinese Opera with an excerpt from The Monkey King and Martial Arts from Beijing incorporating the five elements - sing, talk, act, fight and acrobatics. Classical myths of India are told through complex rhythms, hand gestures and dance in the performance of Bharatanatyam. Invigorating Japanese Taiko drumming, flutes and the koto embrace the legends of Japan. Some lucky students will even have the opportunity to perform in the traditional Chinese Ribbon Dance! With performances rarely seen in the U.S., this performance offers a unique experience in song, dance, theatre and stories performed by master artists.
