Selected Shorts
Harlem Resonance

This special evening of Selected Shorts is a literary walk through the streets of Harlem during the 20s and 30s, which, according to the lyrical master, is when "the Negro was in vogue." Hughes (1902-1967) emerged on the literary scene in 1926 with the publication of his first collection of poems, The Weary Blues. Hughes short stories will be performed by actors from the stage and screen, including Sonia Manzano (Maria from Sesame Street), Colman Domingo (The Scottsboro Boys; Lincoln) and Michael Genet (25th Hour). Hosted by BD Wong.

Du Bose Heyward wrote in the New York Herald Tribune, "Langston Hughes, although only twenty-four years old, is already conspicuous in the group of Negro intellectuals who are dignifying Harlem with a genuine art life... Always intensely subjective, passionate, keenly sensitive to beauty and possessed of an unfaltering musical sense, Langston Hughes has given us a ‘first book' that marks the opening of a career well worth watching."
