NY Piano Quartet: A Tribute to Mahler

(Past) Fri, Sep 16 at 8 pm
Peter Jay Sharp Theatre at Symphony Space
$20; Member, Senior $15; Day of Show $25

NY Chamber Music Festival

In a tribute to Mahler, several composers offer their reflections on Mahler's only chamber music work - his youthful (but still magnificent) Piano Quartet. Works by Mahler, Schnittke, Luhl-Dolgorukiy (American premiere), and world premieres of compositions by Nicolas Prada Diaz, Wang Jie, Barney Johnson, Cristina Spinei, Gernot Wolfgang and Noel Zahler. Also included in this Mahler tribute program is "Strangely Close Yet Distant" - a trio by Patricia Leonard, inspired by Alma Mahler. The concert ends with Busoni-Schoenberg's "Berceuse elegiaque", which was conducted, at its 1911 premiere in New York, by Mahler in his last appearance on stage (Schoenberg later created a chamber music version of this work). For this finale, the New York Piano Quartet is joined by guests artists Jon Deak (bass), Hulda Jonsdottir (viloin), Lucian Rinando (flute), John Laughton (clarinet) and Ralph Lockwood (harmonium).
