Jiva Performing Arts and Blue-Skinned God Records present the legendary mridangist Karaikudi R Mani in concert. He will be joined by the four-time Grammy winner Glen Velez. NYC based award winning group Akshara Music Ensemble will be the open the evening.
This is Karaikudi R. Mani's first ever appearance in NYC in his illustrious 60 year career. He is considered to be one of the foremost percussionists hailing from the South Indian Carnatic tradition. With his own percussion driven ensemble, Shruti Laya, he developed a cult-like following among drummers around the world. He received the prestigious national award from Sangeet Natak Academi in 1999.
Glen Velez is a four-time Grammy winning percussionist, vocalist and composer based in the US. He is credited as the musician who popularized the frame drum in the US. Glen Velez has released over 20 albums during his career. This is Glen Velez's and Karaikudi Mani's first ever collaboration.
Akshara Music Ensemble is a NYC based band founded in 2008 by composer Bala Skandan. Their debut album In Time has received rave reviews and is considered one of the best world music albums from 2018.
The event is produced by Aum Shanti Aum Productions (ASAP) in support of the Indian Development Foundation's Malvani Slums Children Education Fund. Part of the proceeds will be donated to this fund.
