Swing your partner! Learn the pattern formations, memorization, steps, rhythms and peer interaction that have contributed to this dance’s enduring popularity. Students’ curiosity is aroused by the wealth of historical knowledge illustrating how social dance reflects the manners and mores of a time period. They are able to draw parallels between the square dance and social dances of today. Square dancing provides a way to move with precision, coordinate space and time, and have fun!

Barbara Barr

Barbara Barr

Barbara Barr focuses on recreating, performing and teaching historical dance from the Renaissance through the present. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BA in English and honors in creative writing, her experience as a teaching artist includes the American Ballroom Theater Company, Lincoln Center Institute, Broadway Theater Institute, Young Audiences, and the Amherst Early Music Festival. Barbara’s mission is to be a guide as her students explore American History through the prism of dance.

Jerbean Gilkes

Jerbean Gilkes

Jerbean Gilkes is a dancer and educator. He has performed and taught at institutions such as Symphony Space, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, the Brooklyn Public Library, and the Brooklyn Museum. He works with the New York City Department of Education’s Sport and Arts in School Foundation and Symphony Space Global Arts: cultural literacy and heritage programs as a dance teacher and choreographer.

Regina Larkin

Regina Larkin

Regina Larkin is internationally recognized as a master teacher, dancer, and choreographer representing the U.S.I.A. “Good Will” missions throughout Latin America, Europe, Asia and Iraq. She has developed and implemented numerous urban and rural arts programs for underserved populations of youth and schools. She is the Manager of Education Programs at Symphony Space and is a graduate of Adelphi University receiving her BA in Dance and MA in Fine Arts and was a professor of dance for over two decades.
