Aida
  Premiered in Europe at La Scala in 1872, the splendor and pageantry of Verdi's grand opera, Aida returned to La Scala's stage as the premiere 2006-2007 season, under the baton of Riccardo Chailly and directed by the legendary Franco Zefferilli. The stellar performance recounting the dramatic story of an Ethiopian princess held in captivity in Egypt drew a sustained 12-minute ovation from the audience.

  Daniel Barenboim debuts as chief conductor and opens the La Scala 2007/2008 season with a new production of Tristan and Isolde. It will be directed by the controversial Patrice Chéreau, who is perhaps best known for his 1976 Ring at Bayreuth, which was greeted as a scandal and later became a rousing success. This truly will be the production that the world-wide opera community will be talking about for years to come.

In another of Puccini’s jewels, set in France during the Second Napoleonic Empire (1852-70), tenor Fernando Portari portrays the love-struck Ruggero opposite Fiorenza Cedollins as Magda, the courtesan who runs away to be with him, but then cannot stand the thought of living his penniless existence. This production, from Teatro La Fenice in Venice, is directed by Graham Vick under the baton of Carlo Rizzi.
