A string stretched under tension becomes excited. From this physical
phenomenon, scientific and musical metaphors are created. Just as
physics seeks to explain the universe, this series explores why string
music in all its diversity, from classical to jazz and traditional to
new, is so evocative and expressive. Designed in collaboration with
Mark O’Connor, who is joined by
The Knights and America’s
Dream Chamber Artists for two evenings, the series also
features two highly personal violin concerts as different as day and
night, Eugene Drucker (Emerson Quartet)
and Sara Caswell
(Downbeat emerging artist
award-winner), two internationally renowned quartets, the
Colorado and
Penderecki, two world premieres by BMI
Foundation award-winning composers and a mini-festival celebrating
Krzysztof Penderecki’s 75th birthday.
GRAMMY Award-winner Mark O’Connor, a violinist-fiddler
and composer hailing from the American aural folk tradition, is joined by Colin
and Eric Jacobsen’s string orchestra The
Knights for two of Vivaldi’s and two of Piazzolla’s
Four Seasons, concluding
with O’Connor’s dazzling American
Seasons.
Tickets: $30/$25; Members $27/$23; Day of Show $35/$30
In a rare solo performance, the renowned violinist of
the Emerson Quartet, Eugene
Drucker presents a uniquely personal world-premiere event,
reading from his acclaimed first novel, The
Savior, about a Jewish, Nazi-era violinist forced to perform concerts
before prisoners of a Nazi labor camp in the waning days of World War II.
The internationally acclaimed, all-female Colorado Quartet, renowned for “impassioned playing and lyrical finesse” (Seattle Times), celebrates its 25th season with an exclusive New York concert featuring the second quartets of Britten and Ginastera and the world premiere of a new work commissioned by the BMI Foundation. Part of Upper West Fest.
The Janaki Trio pay tribute to Krzysztof Penderecki with his String Trio, Prelude and Clarinet Quartet juxtaposed with the Schubert String Trio and the world premiere of new work commissioned by the BMI Foundation. Presented in cooperation with Concert Artists Guild. Part of Upper West Fest.
A rare New York appearance for the Canadian-based Penderecki Quartet, “an ensemble of formidable power and keen musical sensibility” (Fanfare), features two Penderecki quartets, plus works by Szymanowski, Panufnik, Kaminsky and Grella-Mozejko. Part of Upper West Fest.
The dynamic musicians of America’s Dream Chamber Artists take a refreshing and inspiring approach to chamber music performance, replacing concert hall formality with unusual interaction with the audience, in a program featuring the New York premiere of O’Connor’s The Fallen for Solo Flute and Strings, as well as his Piano Trio No. 1, Poets and Prophets.
With equally impressive credits in jazz and classical, including tours with Mark O’Connor’s Fiddle Celebration ensemble, crossover violinist Sara Caswell offers a solo concert showcasing the full range of her dazzling musical artistry.
