Symphony Space, one of New York’s most dynamic centers for artistic exploration, furthers its reputation as the creative home for some of today's most innovative and eclectic musicians by presenting The Adventurers. Culling together performers from across a broad spectrum of genres, The Adventurers series presents a number of unique artistic voices ranging from that of English singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock to the Pulitzer prize-winning composer David Del Tredici.

The Adventurers series kicks off on November 22 with a performance by founder of the seminal `80s punk/new wave band the Soft Boys, Robyn Hitchcock. Hitchcock will be performing his 1984 album I Often Dream of Trains in its entirety, with the performance being filmed for the Sundance Channel. On December 4, an all-Del Tredici program features soprano Melissa Fogarty and tenor Robert Frankenberry in the premiere of My Favorite Penis Poems,a bawdy song-cycle based on some of the world’s most explicit texts from Rumi to Allen Ginsberg. Also on the program are Wondrous the Merge and Miss Inez Sez. A Simply Barbra Holiday Spectacular features a number of Broadway guest stars including Tituss Burgess and The Broadway Boys alongside Steven Brinberg’s diva Simply Barbra for an evening of holiday numbers on December 20. On January 22 in an event presented in cooperation with the Concert Artists Guild, toy pianist, composer and performance artist Phyllis Chen plays the world premiere of a toy piano piece by Nathan Davis alongside works for piano including Bach, Schubert, Janáček, and Alvin Lucier. Furthermore, The Adventurers explores different approaches towards string compositions when violinist Michi Wiancko teams up with electric violist Martha Mooke for a genre-spanning premiere of a work written specifically for their Symphony Space performance on February 27. Amplified string quartet ETHEL returns to Symphony Space for a third consecutive ETHEL Fair 2009 sharing the stage with their favorite musical innovators on April 30. Wiancko returns to Symphony Space on May 21 with her band Kono Michi for a night of premieres titled From Sketch to Sound that will also feature collaborations between cellists Soo Bae & David Ludwig and the Parker String Quartet & Geoffrey Gordon.

The Adventurers series draws to a close on June 12 with David Del Tredici’s Brother, an hour-long theatrical piece featuring performance artist John Kelly created around ten of Del Tredici’s songs.

When Symphony Space opened its doors in 1978 with its first production, Wall to Wall Bach, it gathered together an eclectic group of musicians, professional and amateur, well-known and emerging. What began as a natural outgrowth of the cultural epicenter that is the Upper West Side, traditionally home to many of the great actors, writers, dancers and musicians of our time, remains a unique melding of world-class artistry with the informality and intimacy of a neighborhood salon.
