Wall to Wall Leonard Bernstein

The Performance

Wall to Wall Leonard Bernstein is the 27th free 12-hour music marathon in the 19-year history of Symphony Space. The first free 12-hour marathon Wall to Wall concerts  were devoted to composers of classical music. Then these annual extravaganzas wee extended to include American musical theatre composers. This 27th Wall to Wall cuts across all categories of previous Wall to Walls for the simple reason that it is devoted to Leonard Bernstein  - the protean maestro and composer whose energy was boundless and whose musical interests were unlimited. Leonard Bernstein was a world renowned musician throughout his entire adult life. He was music director of the New York Philharmonic and conducted the world’s major orchestras. His books and the televised Young People’s Concerts with the New York Philharmonic established him as a leading educator. His compositions include, among others, Jeremiah, The Age of Anxiety, Kaddish, Serenade, Trouble in Tahiti, Five Anniversaries, Mass, Chichester Psalms,Slalval,Songfest, Divertimento for Orchestra, Missa Bevis, Arias and Bacarolles, Concerto for Orchestra, and a Quiet Place. Bernstein composed for the Broadway musical stage, including   On the Town, Wonderful Town, Candide and West Side Story. In addition to the West Side Story collaboration, Mr. Bernstein worked with choreographer Jerome Robbins on three major ballets,  Fancy Free, Facsimile and Dybbuk. Mr. Bernstein was the recipient of many honors, including eleven Emmy Awards, the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award and the Kennedy Center Honors.
