John Freeman is an award-winning writer and book critic who has written for numerous publications, including The New York Times Book Review, the Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, and The Wall Street Journal. Freeman won the 2007 James Patterson PageTurner Award. He was recently named editor of Granta. The Tyranny of E-mail: The Four-Thousand-Year Journey to Your Inbox is his first book.

Thomas Mallon is the author of seven novels, including Henry and Clara, Dewey Defeats Truman, Bandbox, and Fellow Travelers, as well as A Books of One's Own, an exploration of diary writing. He is a frequent contributor to The New Yorker, The New York Times Book Review, and The Atlantic Monthly. He lives in Washington, D.C..
