A Discussion with the Audience

Louise Erdrich's latest book, The Red Convertible: Selected and New Stories, brings together for the first time three decades of short stories. This brand new collection, selected by the author, includes thirty works that first appeared in magazines, as well as six unpublished stories. Erdrich is the author of twelve novels, including The New York Times bestseller The Plague of Doves, National Book Award finalist The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse, Tales of Burning Love, and Love Medicine, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction. She is also the author of two collections of poetry, Jacklight and Baptism of Desire; several books for young adults; and a memoir, The Blue Jay's Dance. She has been the recipient of the O'Henry Award, the Pushcart Prize, the Nelson Algren Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and two National Magazine Awards for Fiction. She currently lives in Minnesota with her daughters and is the owner of Birchbark Books, a small independent bookstore.

Amy Goodman is the host and executive producer of Democracy Now!, a national, daily, independent, award-winning news program airing on over 750 TV and radio stations in North America. She recently received the Right Livelihood Award, often referred to as the alternative Nobel. In 2006, she was the recipient of the Puffin/Nation Prize for Creative Citizenship. Her daily reporting and groundbreaking work from Nigeria and East Timor has won numerous awards, including the George Polk Award and the Robert F. Kennedy Prize for International Reporting. Goodman is the co-author-with her brother, journalist David Goodman-of three New York Times bestsellers: Standing Up to the Madness: Ordinary Heroes in Extraordinary Times; Static: Government Liars, Media Cheerleaders, and the People Who Fight Back; and The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media That Love Them.

Sonia Manzano is known to millions of children and parents through her role as Maria on Sesame Street, a character she has played since 1971. Her theatre credits include The Vagina Monologues, The Exonerated, and the original production of Godspell. She has won 15 Emmy Awards as a writer for Sesame Street, received the 2003 Hispanic Heritage Award, and in 2005 was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from Notre Dame University. Closer to home, she is proud to have been inducted into the Bronx Hall of Fame. She has written for the Peabody Award-winning Nickelodeon series Little Bill, is the author of the picture books No Dogs Allowed! and A Box Full of Kittens, and is currently working on a memoir.
