The Sidney Bechet Society presents trumpeter Byron Stripling's Hot Jazz Band plus a 90th birthday salute to pianist Marty Napoleon.
Byron Stripling is returning for an encore performance after his amazing 2010 Sidney Bechet Society concert. A spectacular trumpeter with a very wide range, a beautiful tone, and the ability to blend together many influences into his own style, Byron Stripling is the artistic director of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, leader of his own quartet, and constantly in demand to play with pops orchestras around the world. He has become a favorite throughout the country, soloing with Boston Pops, Cincinnati Pops, Seattle Symphony and Baltimore Symphony. He has also been a featured soloist at the Hollywood Bowl and performs at jazz festivals throughout the world. In addition he is an accomplished actor and singer, appearing on Broadway and in Hollywood films. Joining Byron are:
Trumpeter Marcus Printup is best known for his 17-year tenure with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. He has performed and/or recorded with Betty Carter, Dianne Reeves, Eric Reed, Cyrus Chestnut, Wycliffe Gordon and Marcus Roberts among others.
Michigan clarinetist Dave Bennett has established himself as America's premier interpreter playing in a style and sound inspired by his hero Benny Goodman. Only 26 years old, Dave was the featured artist on two broadcasts of Jim Cullum's broadcast Riverwalk Landing. We are excited to present Dave in his first New York City appearance.
Aaron Diehl: Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as the most promising discovery that Wynton Marsalis has made since Eric Reed, Aaron's distinctive interpretations of the music of Scott Joplin, "Jelly Roll" Morton, Art Tatum, Duke Ellington, and other masters pays homage to the tradition while establishing his own original voice. A graduate of the Julliard School, Aaron has toured through the world and performed with the Wynton Marsalis Septet, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, The Boston Symphony Orchestra, Benny Golson, Hank Jones, Wycliffe Gordon, Wessell Anderson, Benny Golson, Loren Schoenberg, and has been featured on Marian McPartland's NPR radio show "Piano Jazz."
Drummer Marion Felder is a graduate of the Julliard School. He has has performed, recorded, and/or toured with among others Marcus Belgrave, Wycliffe Gordon, Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Grady Tate, Sara Gazarek, Hank Jones, Bobby Watson, Paul Simon, Nile Rodgers, Carla Cooke, Regina Carter, Martha Reeves, Tom Harrell, Donald Brown, Hank Jones and Ernestine Anderson.
Bassist Yasushi Nakamura is a graduate of Berklee College of Music and the Julliard School. He was born in Tokyo and grew up in Seattle. His musical training began at age eleven with clarinet and tenor saxophone, and he switched to bass at age fourteen. He has performed with jazz stars including Victor Goines, Benny Golson, Jon Hendricks, Hank Jones, and Wynton Marsalis.
