Wall to Wall Opera Program 2 – “400 Years”

The Performance

Symphony Space’s free Wall to Wall marathons have been our annual “gift to the city” (New York Times) since 1978.  In the Spring of 2007, Wall to Wall Opera explored the world of Western opera over the past 400 years, from Baroque to contemporary. Highlights of the day included a Master Class in bel canto with legendary soprano, Renata Scotto; the “Opera Matinee” featuring the New York City Opera Orchestra conducted by Gerald Steichen; performances by members of the Metropolitan Opera’s Young Artists Program; scenes from American operas performed by Encompass New Opera Theatre, new operas performed by Center for Contemporary Opera, Music-Theatre Group and American Opera Projects; and much more.

Excerpts from this 13-hour marathon have been grouped into two programs. Program 2, “400 Years,” features Artek, performing the first opera, Orfeo,  the New York City Opera Orchestra performing Grand Opera Classics; and a sampler of new and recent opera excerpts, including Richard Danielpour’s acclaimed Margaret Garner.
