The Sippy Cups

The Performance

With a magical party atmosphere, San Francisco's The Sippy Cups blend comic stunts, puppets, giant balloons and confetti with their imaginative original tunes and cult rock covers from bands as diverse as The Beatles, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, The Who and even The Ramones.

"Every parent's favorite kid rock band and quite possibly the illegitimate offspring of The Cat in the Hat and Joey Ramone."
- San Francisco Chronicle

"The Sippy Cups harness the childlike euphoria of psychedelia and the energy of power pop to deliver music that passes a crucial test: Repeated listenings won't drive the parents mad."
- Wired Magazine

About the Artists

San Francisco’s The Sippy Cups were born at a 2004 community fundraiser, just three musical dads playing kid-friendly takes on Nirvana and Syd Barrett tunes. Six years later, they’ve performed their sophisticated (and cool-parent-approved) kids’ music to major concert halls and rock festivals, including the Austin City Limits Festival and Lollapalooza. The Sippy Cups have scored top-ten satellite radio hits and received accolades from Time, Newsweek, New York Post, Billboard, Wired, LA Times, and the Washington Post. In 2007, with Alternadad author Neal Pollack, they appeared in a feature on ABC’s Nightline. Later that year, the band released their first-ever live concert DVD documenting their colorful, dynamic stage show: Electric Storyland: Live at the Great American Music Hall. The song “Seven is the New Fourteen” from their latest album, The Time Machine, was recently selected as the iTunes Music Store’s first Children’s Genre Discovery Download and had 90,000 downloads in one week! It went on to become #1 on XM/Sirius Radio’s Kids Place Live station.

The current Sippy Cups lineup includes singer/keyboardist Paul Godwin, singer/guitarist Rudy Trubitt (The Squids), drummer Jozef Becker (Thin White Rope, The Loud Family), and bassist Ariane Cap, as well as juggler/unicyclist/all-around character Doug Nolan; and joining the band since the fall of 2009 are multi-instrumentalist Gabby La La and juggler/dancer Zack Bernstein.

The Sippies all have extensive credentials in the world of grown-up entertainment as well: Mr. Godwin has composed award-winning scores for stage and film, including the West Coast debut of Tony Kushner’s Homebody/Kabul and the #1 iTunes film The Tribe. Gabby La La has performed and recorded with Primus’ Les Claypool, Bob Weir and Ratdog, Snoop Dogg and De La Soul’s Prince Paul. Rudy Trubitt records train sounds for Lionel Trains. Ariane Cap performs, records and teaches extensively, and Doug Nolan is a graduate of American Conservatory Theatre who practices his juggling while presenting environmental education programs throughout California. As the time machine stops at 2010, The Sippy Cups are ready to mark this phase with an album that’s grown with their fans and their clans. Expect it to be met—as they say in “One Day Soon”—with “the sound of hundreds of tapping feet.” Some of those feet are small... some a little bigger than last time around... and odds are, one or two of them will be yours.”
