Composers Now

2128

As part of New York's city-wide festival, Composers Now! the American Composers Alliance is collaborating with Lunatics at Large, to present recent works by Richard Brooks, Richard Cameron-Wolfe, Eleanor Cory, Brian Fennelly, Thomas Flaherty, Jan Gilbert, and Louis Karchin.

Full program:

  • Richard Brooks: Circular Motions for flute, clarinet, and piano
  • Richard Cameron-Wolfe: Labyrinths for Soprano, cello, and piano
  • Eleanor Cory: Things Are for flute and piano
  • Brian Fennelly: Sukhi! for clarinet, violin, cello, and piano
  • Thomas Flaherty: Scenes from Sarajevo for Soprano, viola, and cello
  • Jan Gilbert: The Indigo Rooftop of the Night for Soprano, alto flute, viola, and piano
  • Louis Karchin: Rhapsody for violin and piano

Lunatics at Large was formed in 2007 to explore the timbral possibilities of chamber music repertoire from the beginning of the 20th century until now. It is a mixed ensemble combining voice, strings, winds and piano. In thematic concerts, the group juxtaposes standard repertoire and chamber pieces from established composers of the 20th century with more recent works. Lunatics at Large thus encourages listeners to hear connections between works and appreciate very recent compositions in the perspective of the evolution of classical music over the last 110 years. Lunatics at Large is committed to working closely with living composers and to commissioning new pieces for its expanded Pierrot instrumentation. The group also embraces collaborative projects with artists from other art forms and is organizing several interdisciplinary performances involving poets, living composers and visual artists in upcoming seasons.

The American Composers Alliance annual concert series began in 2000, as a showcase to introduce new works by ACA composers. With support from Symphony Space, the concert series has evolved into a collaboration between composers and performers that goes beyond ACA, and features top-level performances. Since 2004, ACA has presented new works by more than 100 American composers, and more than 35 works by young composers, with support from the Alice M. Ditson Fund, the Argosy Foundation's Contemporary Music Fund, the Cary New Music Performance Fund, the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, the Puffin Foundation, BMI, and
many generous individuals.

In 2012, ACA celebrated its 75th anniversary with a gala concert of works from the ACA catalog, performed by the Orchestra of the League of Composers, with soloists including cellist Fred Sherry and pianist Orion Weiss.

Music from the ACA catalog is licensed for performance by Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI). Printed sheet music is available from www.composers.com

ACA is thrilled to be collaborating with the amazing ensemble Lunatics at Large for this year's Composers Now! festival.
