Rebels+REDS: Fernando Otero + Nick Danielson
Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Symphony Space
Symphony Space Music
Latin American dance music meets American Jazz and Eastern European folk music when Otero returns to the Thalia with more of his startlingly original virtuosity, along with Nick Danielson on violin. The evening's music is paired with Three Thieves "The Show" Malbec, a bright, complex, medium-bodied red with ripe notes of blackberry, cranberry, and violets on the nose and palate. Smooth tannins and balanced acidity merge with hints of white pepper and toasty vanilla on the lingering finish.
"Mr. Otero...vibrantly summoned tango ancestors while also acknowledging Bartok and Prokofiev. His brilliant playing bore traces of jazz pianists like Bill Evans and Don Pullen. The resulting synthesis proposed bold new directions for a venerable tradition." -The New York Times
