Winner of the 2011 Thelonius Monk Competition, pianist/composer Bobby Avey leads his band (Jordan Perlson, drums; Thomson Kneeland, bass; Ben Monder, guitar; Miguel Zenón, alto sax) in an hour long jazz suite, Authority Melts from Me, inspired by the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804). Avey's unique documentation of Vodou drumming music and immersion in the small villages of Haiti are the forces behind this powerful project.
