For the last two seasons, The Thalia Film Club has featured three series of 5 pre-release screenings and behind-the-scenes coversations. This past year we featured the star-studded drama Margin Call about the economic crisis with guest, director J.C. Chandor; Shakespeare's Coriolanus with first time director and star of the film, Ralph Fiennes; Oscar contender The Descendants starring George Clooney, with guest, producer Jim Taylor; Jeff, Who Lives at Home with superstar funny man Ed Helms as the guest; the timely and moving documentary Bully with director/writer/producer/cinematographer Lee Hirsch as guest and the romantic comedy Hysteria with guest director Tanya Wexler, along with many other surprising, heart-stopping, finely crafted cinematic works by new directors and seasoned veterans.
Join host Marshall Fine, film critic for the Huffington Post and three-time chair of the New York Film Critics Circle, in his second installment of provocative pre-release films, featuring behind-the-scenes conversations with more surprise special guests. Subscribers will not only see new films before they reach theaters, but will get the opportunity to engage in discussions with creative talents from those films after the screenings.
Fine has created successful film clubs at the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, NY, and the Emelin Theater in Mamaroneck, NY, and is a popular guest host at other film clubs in New York and the area. His previous guests at other film clubs range from directors such as Guillermo del Toro, Robert Towne and Barry Levinson to actors such as Penelope Cruz, Kevin Costner, Paul Giamatti and Clive Owen. Films have ranged from the moving Best Foreign Film winning drama Departures and Peter Jackson's adaptation of the best-selling novel The Lovely Bones, to the comedy Me and Orson Welles and Pedro Almodovar's latest offering, Broken Embraces.
"Movies are the most popular and populist of the visual arts," Fine says. "In an entertainment capital like New York, you can never underestimate the appeal of getting in on something first, something exclusive - and all without having to leave your Upper West Side neighborhood."
Fine's film series have consistently sold out, despite a general policy of not revealing the film titles in advance: "For me, one of the true joys of movie-going is seeing a film I know nothing about and discovering a gem," Fine says. "In these media-saturated times, people usually have the opposite experience: They go in knowing so much in advance that the movie itself can be a letdown. I love giving audiences that sensation of discovery - as well as the experience of seeing a film they might not normally have chosen for themselves and being blown away by it."
Fine is also a member of the New York Film Critics Online. A former national film correspondent for Gannett News Service, he is a contributing editor for Cigar Aficionado and the author of well-regarded biographies of directors Sam Peckinpah and John Cassavetes and actor Harvey Keitel.
