Newly established contemporary music organization Ear to Mind announces its first production, Live Art, featuring the world premiere of Five Pieces by Nils Vigeland, as well as works by Gérard Grisey, Lukas Ligeti, Vivian Fung, and two world premieres from emerging composers Inhyun Kim and Dillon Kondor. Performed by pianist Jenny Q Chai and Iktus Percussion Quartet, the program includes dance and new video art from emerging Brooklyn-based artists.
Premiering Vigeland's Five Pieces will be the "brilliant and fearless" pianist Jenny Q Chai, to whom the piece is dedicated. Also slated for premiere is a new work in multiple movements by Inhyun Kim for percussion ensemble, pianist, and dancer, as well as Dillon Kondor's Framed Images of Snow Falling for percussion ensemble, commissioned by Ear to Mind. Vivian Fung's percussive Glimpses for prepared piano, Lukas Ligeti's vertiginous Pattern Transformation for two marimbas, and Gérard Grisey's primal, bellicose Stèle for two percussionists complete the program.
In line with Ear to Mind's vision to program contemporary music "regardless of the manner of its composition and performance," Live Art encompasses several styles of composition, from the strict to the improvisatory, and likewise furthers ETM's mission to program contemporary music with works from other arts communities.
