This performance features the world premiere of the concert version of Orpheus Lex, an opera by Hindemith's protégé Marie Nelson Bennett, which is a modern version of the classic story set in a mountain retreat in Idaho, where Orpheus, a popular/folk singer, has retired. Performers include David Arnold, baritone and Wendy Baker, soprano, The New York Virtuoso Singers and the Artemis Chamber Ensemble, Harold Rosenbaum, conductor. In addition, composer William Thomas McKinley has chosen the Middle English lay Sir Orfeo, a magical, Celtic-influenced recreation of the Orpheus myth, in a startling new work for The New York Virtuoso Singers and GRAMMY Award-winning clarinetist Richard Stoltzman. Mr. Stoltzman's virtuosity, musicianship, and sheer personal magnetism have made him one of today's most sought-after concert artists.
