A Tale of Two Cities: Baroque Dance and Music in Paris and London
A
Tale of Two Cities, Baroque Music and Dance in Paris and London with
Concert Royal directed by James Richman and The New York Baroque Dance Company
directed by Catherine Turocy. This evening features dances from the English
court including The Diana (originally choreographed for an ancestor of
Princess Diana Spencer), The Prince of Wales Sarabande and The
Camilla, all published during the first half of the 18th century in London. French
dances from the court of Versailles include La Royalle and La
Bourbon. It is fascinating to note that the music for these English and
French ball dances came from well-known dance tunes of the operas of Lully,
Campra and Handel! By popular demand, the Passacaille d’Armide will be
performed by Catherine Turocy. Many of these charming and rarely performed gems
are newly reconstructed from period dance notations by Caroline Copeland, Ani
Udovicki and Catherine Turocy and danced in period costumes
by the company.
