Find out how the CAP web site provides expanded resources for teaching and learning social studies.

Explore visiting and performance artists' work and background.

Over thousands of years, prior to the Spanish conquest in the 16th C, many different peoples lived in what is today known as Latin America. Several of these cultures were characterized by agriculture, large cities, specific art and architectural styles and a high level of mathematical and astronomical advancement.

Even after the arrival of the Europeans and Catholicism, many of these traditions endured. The indigenous practices, images, sounds, tastes, and ideas blended not only with the European, but with traditions from Africa that came over with the African slaves. Latin America today is a vibrant and complex culture that pulses with the energy of this dynamic history.
