In African cultures, "Art" — whether it be music, dance, sculpture, carving or painting — is not a concept divorced from daily life. Cultural history is preserved in artistic expression, as much in everyday objects and activities as in ceremonial ones. Visual arts, music, language, movement and ritual, together communicate and perpetuate cultural traditions and belief systems.

The following Lesson Plans use traditional African art objects and folk tales to stimulate a deeper understanding of African culture through both research and creative projects.

EACH LESSON PLAN HAS:

For Teachers
• full African Studies Lesson Plans
• information about researching on the Internet

For Students
• links to on-site resources
• links to Internet resources
