Trombonist/composer/bandleader Wycliffe Gordon created a powerful evening-length work to accompany Within Our Gates, the historic 1920 silent film by Oscar Micheaux, one of the most prolific early African-American filmmakers. Gordon’s big band score, originally commissioned by Jazzmobile, captures the film’s turbulent times — an America embroiled in the violent years of Jim Crow, the Ku Klux Klan, the Great Migration, and the emergence of the "New Negro." |
