In the spring of 2005, National Geographic photographer James Balog heads to the Arctic on a tricky assignment: to capture images to help tell the story of the Earth’s changing climate. Even with a scientific upbringing, Balog is a skeptic about climate change. But that first trip north opens his eyes to the biggest story in human history and sparks a challenge within him that puts his career and his very well-being at risk.

Samsara is a Sanskrit word that means “the ever turning wheel of life” and is the point of departure for the filmmakers as they search for the elusive current of interconnection that runs through our lives. Filmed over a period of almost five years and in twenty-five countries, Samsara transports us to sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial sites, and natural wonders. By dispensing with dialogue and descriptive text, Samsara subverts our expectations of a traditional documentary, and instead encourages us to formulate our own interpretations inspired by diverse images, and music that infuses the ancient with the modern.
